Thailand launches 3D-printed coral restoration project
The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) in Thailand has initiated a project to install 3D-printed coral larvae islands at Siam Bay, near Racha Yai Island, to restore a severely degraded coral reef. The project is financially backed by Thai Union Group and the Siam Cement Group (SCG). The concrete material used for the 3D-printed forms mimics the shape and texture of natural coral reefs. It is expected that corals will begin colonising the modules within a year of placement.
