Thai Finance Minister and Prime Minister urge reconsideration of using digital wallet funds for smartphones
Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin urged the Commerce Ministry to reconsider allowing recipients of the 10,000-baht payout from the digital wallet scheme to use funds on mobile phones, as it may not benefit the local economy. The digital wallet scheme is a key policy of the Pheu Thai Party-led government, designed to revive the struggling economy. The Cabinet recently approved a Budget Bureau proposal to increase the budget deficit for the 2024 fiscal year by 112 billion baht to fund the scheme.
