Thailand proposes tighter regulations for social media influencers
Thailand's NESDC proposed tighter regulations for social media influencers to combat unethical or illegal content. The proposed regulations aim to extend the Media Standard, Ethics, and Freedom Protection Act to cover online content creators, and redefine social media within the law. The move comes in response to the increasing influence of online content creators and the growing concern over unethical practices, including promoting vices like online gambling. Influencers in Thailand play a significant role in the global economic value of content creation, which is projected to reach US$140.3 billion by 2030. The intensified competition in content production and audience engagement has led some influencers to produce unethical or illegal content to generate revenue, including spreading fake news and promoting online gambling.
